After 12 years of continuous dolomite application to the surfarce of an orchard without working into the soil, an analysis of the cations of the various depths showed that more than 55 percent of the applied cations were held in the first 5 cm of the soil, 10 percent in the second 5 cm of the soil and the remainder had moved downward, some having been redistributed into the mandarin trees, others leaching to the depth below the root zone. As to the below 20 cm depth, a very little cations accumulation has been recognized. About 70 percent of the cations accumulated in the top layer is seemed to be the same form as originally applied without having received any chemical changes. None of the soil managing practices adopted in this experiment; light top cultivation, ammonium sulfate fertilization, and rice straw mulch could cancel to any great extent such a maldistribution of cations in the soil profile. |
