By-period linear full-rank models are presented for the complete three-treatment, two-period crossover design according to four methods of definition of parameters.; The definition of the parameters of interest (main effects and carryover effects) in models without sequence effects is shown to be equivalent to the definition of the corresponding parameters in models with sequence effects, when sequence effects are considered to be zero.; For aspects of subdesigns are studied: (1) definition of the parameters, (2) robust subdesigns with respect to the loss of one or more cells, (3) optimality in subdesigns and (4) behavior of the power of the tests in subdesigns compared to that in the complete design for the same tests.; Using three variance criteria of optimality, the study showed that there is no subdesign that is uniformly optimum with respect to all criteria and all sets of parameters.; The behavior of the F-tests in subdesigns for testing the three important hypotheses was studied by using the noncentrality ratio (NR) between each subdesign and the complete design, when both are balanced and have the same number of observations.; By examining the range of the noncentrality ratio, it was shown that no subdesign has uniformly greater power for all three hypotheses than the complete design, and that, in some classes of subdesigns, for a specific hypothesis, the complete design is uniformly better than the subdesigns. However, in many cases, subdesigns can be better than the complete design, depending on the value of the parameter.
