Twenty-four-hour urine samples from 33 ram, 37 cryptorchid, and 31 wether lambs were collected and tested for the amounts of 11-deoxy 17-ketosteroids. On average, wethers produced about two-thirds (598 g) and cryptorchids about one-third (371 g) of the androsterone and etiocholanolone produced by rams (929 g). The means, however, were not significantly different due to the high variation within each sex-group. The amounts of dehydroepiandrosterone excreted per day in ram, cryptorchid, and wether lambs were 191, 102, and 163 g, respectively. Amounts of other unknown 17-ketosteroids were measured. Relationships between the various steroids, expressed by simple and partial correlation coefficients, gave a significant indication that some differences exist in the overall endocrinological systems between the sex groups. |
