Laboratory analysis were used to evaluate the quality of forage produced by three cultivars of bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flugge), one acession of limpograss (Hemarthria altissima (Poir) Stapf. et C.E. Hubb) and three breeders'lines of digitgrass (Digitaria decumbens Stent.). The analytical procedures were neutral detergent fiber (NDP), neutral detergent solubles (NDS), acid tetergent fiber (ADP), acid detergent ligning (ADL), crude protein (CP) and in vitro organic matter digestion (IVOMD). Samples of the regrowth were harvested with each advance of one week in ae, beginning on July 24, 1975 through the eighteenth week, followed by a final harvest after several frosts at the twenty-second week, for total of nineteen harvests. Five mathematical models were tested to fit the quality parameters. Prediction equations were chosen from the best fitting models. IVOMD and NDS decreased amd NDF, adf and ADL increased with age. Crude protein decreased with increasing age follewed by an increase in the late harvest of all grasses except in the breeders' line 'X46-2' of digitgrass. This increase in crude protein towards the and of the season may be explained by the occurrence of new regrowth. When comparing the values grouped by species and estimated by the best fitting models at the first and last harvest, the following maximum ranges were obtained. No single quality parameter was consistently the best predictor of IVOMD for all grasses. |
