Oligomeric organic conductors are expected to have higher crystallinity than their polymeric couterparts; consequently oligomers should display an increased interdomain conductivity thus enhancing their bulk conductivity when compared to conducting polymers. The interest in the study of ordered layers of this special class of materials arises from their large potential application in the field of molecular electronics. The Langmuir-Blodgett tecnique has been widely used for this purpose as it allows control over the molecular packing in the fabrication of highly ordered ultrathin organic films. In the present work, we report for the first time on the preparation and characterisation of composite Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett films of 16-mer polyaniline and cadmium stearate. The amount of these composite films has been varied systematically and the effect of composition on the monolayer stability and the multilayer transfer process has been studied. Composite monolayers were characterized by surface pressure and surface potential isotherms which basically indicate the de4crease of monolayyer stability with increasing 16-mer amount above 60% in the composite. The transfer process was also found to depend on the 16-mer content in the composite monolayer, with poor transfer above 60% of 16-mer. transferred filmswere characterized by UV-vis, FTIR, d.c. electrical conductivity and surface potential measurements. The observed linear increase of absorption corresponding to the 16-mer with increasing number of layers indicated a uniform transfer of the oligomer in the composite LB films. The results are compared with those obtained with the composite LB films of high molecular weight polyaniline and cadmium stearate.
