We subjected a native North American grassland to three controlled SO2 concentrations and to nitrogen and sulfur fertilizer for one complete growing season (April-August). Interactions of low concentrations SO2 (52 ug/m3) with nitrogen fertilizer resulted in significant increases in above- and below-ground plant biomass. Nitrogen plus sulfur fertilizer and the highest SO2 concentration (200 ug/m3) significantly decreased total aboveground yield compared with the same amendment without SO2 or with the lowest concentration of SO2. Nitrogen uptake showed a positive interaction of nitrogen fertilization with low concentration SO2. Sulfur concentrations increased and total sulfur uptake decreased on SO2 treatments without nitrogen fertilization, compared with decreased sulfur concentration and increased gross sulfur uptake on SO2 treatments with nitrogen fertilization. The results are discussed with respect to the balance between positive and negative, short- and long-term impacts of SO2 on plant response. |
