The simulation models for plant development have been used in many areas of the agricultural science, specially to the ones related to agrometeorological zoning and harvest monitoring. The decision support System for Agrotechnology Transfer (DSSAT) integrates simulation models, data banks, softwate for data management, and routine analyses that permit estimation of the plant development cultivars very precisely during specific environmental conditions. In most of the cases, however, there is no interest in knowing the behavior of a specific cultivar, but of cultivars as a whole group. Thus the objective of this work was to define coefficients that represent groups of cultivars submitted to specific conditions, allowing a precise estimation of the coefficients was made using data obtained from several years of experiments with Brazilian semi-early cultivars (the group most planted presently in Brazil) presenting different responses to water deficit. After introducing all the necessary information into the DSSAT system the model was run trying to find the best adjustment of the estimates. It was possible to estimate the average performance of the group of cultivars studied. The adjustments obtained permitted estimations of the grain yield very close to the observed values at field. Furthermore, the adjusted coefficients allowed the observation of the differences in plants submitted to different water availability conditions. Phenology and biomass estimations also did not differ significantly from observed values at field. Therefore, it is possible to conclude that soybean crop performance can be estimated for an average of cultivars and not for only one cultivar.
