A fifteen month experiment was conducted to study the pattern of utilization of Lehmann lovegrass by cows during different seasons at three stocking rates on four patch types (grazed, open; grazed, under-mesquite; mowed, artificial and an ungrazed control) at The Santa Rita Experimental Range. The purpose of the research was to determine the influence of standing biomass, proportion of green material and nutrient content of patch types on the relative time cattle grazed patch types. Cattle biting rate on patch types was also measured. Total biomass was higher at moderate followed by heavy and very heavy stocking rates. Green biomass (kg/ha) was higher at moderate followed by very heavy and heavy stocking rates. The proportion of green biomass was higher at the very heavy treatment than at moderate or heavy stocking rates. Height of leaves and flowers were greater at moderate followed by heavy and very heavy stocking rates. Protein, phosphorus, calcium and neutral detergent fiber contents were higher in green than in complete (unseparated) samples. Height of leaves and flowers, dry biomass (kg/ha and %), green biomass (kg/ha) and total biomass were greater on ungrazed patches. Proportion of green was greater in grazed than ungrazed patches. Protein, phosphorus, calcium and IVDMD were higher in green and complete samples of grazed than patches. Cattle grazed for an average of 7 hours during the 14 hour period of observation. On the upland area, grazing was concentrated on previously grazed patches. At all stocking rates cows grazed more in open patches. Within season grazing time was t moderate, heavy and very heavy stocking rates. Grazing he upland was greater in the open patch at all stocking n on ungrazed areas. Biting rate was higher on grazed han on ungrazed areas at all stocking rates and seasons, except the summer dry season, when biting rate was similar at all stocking rates. Seasonal biting rate was low during winter and high during the summer wet season of 1985 and 1986. Cattle concentrated grazing upon upland, open grazed and under-mesquite canopy. These selected areas were higher in proportion of green biomass and nutrient value and total standing crop and total green biomass than areas. Nutrient density, rather than biomass appeared to govern cattle grazing.
