X-rays computerized tomography (CT) is becoming a popular method of obtaining cross-sectional images of objects. Many commercial CT scanners using continuous spectrum X-rays from either an X-ray tube or y-ray source are now available for medical and non-medical applications. We have developed a dedicated computerized tomographic scanner system for agriculture applications, which is being used at the Center for Instrumentation of the Brazilian Enterprise for Agricultural Research (EMBRAPA-CNPDIA). As a new methodology in both instrumentation and soil research it has proved to be useful for measuring both volumetric water content and soil bulk density respectively with accuracy of +-3% and +-2%. This paper describes not only the improvements in the first design of the computerized tomographic system using an architecture based on the TMS320C40 but also discusses the potentialities in applying dedicated CT scanners in the field of soil science. |
