Management systems effect on soil organic matter (SOM) storage has been well characterized, mainly under temperate climatic conditions. In the tropical and subtropical chimates, studies demonstrated to be possible maintain or increase SOM storage in cultivated soils with no-tillage and high crop residue additions to the soil surface. Changes in SOM structure also can occur. So far most of the research on this information exists on this important issue in the tropical and subtropical regions. The use of conventional chemical metods and advanced physico-chemical tehcniques including electron spin resonance (ESR) an fluorescentce spectroscopies have allowed the elucidation of several aspects of the chemical structures, functionalities and reactivity of SOM. |
