This presentation is aimed at giving new data on a taxocoenosis of oribatids (Acari: Oribatida),
from an urban park, ?Paseo del Bosque? located at La Plata, Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The park houses an one hundred old wood componed of Eucalyptus sp.. The wood covers 220
hectares surrounded by a city of ca. 600,000 inhabitants. We tried to evaluate whether the studied
soil community would bring useful information of environmental disturbances due to anthropic
use of soil. We surveyed the study site during eight years, sine 2,000. We compared several
locations of the park according to the degree of alteration observed in the soil at different deepness
and seasons of the year. Moreover, we performed simulation experiences of human transit
searching for its effects on the meiofauna and on physic parameters and the dynamics of
processes related to the soil´s health. We also explored possible indicators species associated
to the the tree leaves. Oribatids were extracted from the soil by using Berlese´s funnels and then
identified at species level and classified regarding the categories proposed by Aoki in 1979, by
associating different taxonomic categories with succesional stages of soil development. Among
the main outcomes it is worth mentioning the inventory of the oribatids of the urban forest system,
the identification of the most abundant species, most of them commonly found in native grasslands
of the ?pampas?. Some of the recorded species are going to be described, while other ones
enlarged their distribution range currently known. Relative abundance was the most sensitive
measurement of human intervention. It decreased to less than one third within the most populated
sectors. The decrease of species density and diversity was not very important, unless the
alteration of the soil were extremely intense. The highest overall abundante was observed during
summer, when organic matter content reached the highest ammount, the humidity was low,
respiration values high and the herbaceous plants showing low diversity and spatial coverage.
Arboreal species showed low taxonomic similarity with those occurring in the soil. Most of the
recorded species belongs to Poronota, a group representing the first successional stages.
Either Macropylina or Gymnonota are more abundant and frequent only outside the park. Galumna
pallida, Protoribates (Triangius) praeoccupatus and Oribatella longisetosa are exclusive and
abundant in those places without human occupation. Conversely, Epilohmannia pallida and
Rhysotritia clavata are only found in high numbers within altered locations. From the non-biotic
anf functional viewpoints, soil compactation and inhibition of herbaceus roots development are
