Soybeans share many of the same weed problems that are found in rice since much of the soybean acreage is rotated with rice. However, weeds in much of the soybean acreage are not problem weeds in rice. Devising a weed control program for soybeans necessitates identifying weeds that are present. A weed history for a given field indicates which weeds probably will be present. Good seedbed preparation is a basic requirement in any good weed control program. A seedbed free of crop residue and large clods allows herbicides to reach the soil and exert their action on the intended target, either seed or emerged weed . A flat furrow or bed is required in directing post-emergence herbicides. Mechanical cultivation is a good weed control practice when done properly andat the right time. Most annual grasses and small-seeded broadleaf weeds are controlled by the dinitroaniline herbicides, such as dinitramine, fluchloralin, oryzalin, pendimethalin, profluralin, and trifluralin. These herbicides, except for oryzalin and pendimethalin, must be incorporated to be effective. Rates will depend on soil type and the specific herbicide. All these herbicides will control essentially the same weeds, except dinitramine, which may be a little weak on seedling johnsongrass and may have a shorter persistence than the other dinitroaniline herbicides. |
