Atrazine (2-Chloro-4-ethylamine-6-isopropylamine-1,3,5-triazine) is one of the pre-emergent herbicides most widely used in the world and has frequently been found as a contaminant in surface and ground waters. The main technique used for atrazine determination is gas chromatography, but in some cases liquid and thin layer methodologies have been employed. On the other hand, electroanalytical techniques such as voltammetry and polarography have also been used [1]. In comparison with gas chromatography, the electroanalytical procedures are faster, cheaper and easier to be carried out. Moreover, they can be successfully employed for the analysis of colored materials or samples containing dispersed solid particles. The disadvantages are, in some cases, related to lower selectivity and sensitivity. The purpose of this work is to study the adsorption of atrazine in samples of tropical soils using Differential Pulse Polarography (DPP) to analyse atrazine concentrations in soil solutions. Electrochemical measurements were carried out in a EG&G PAR mod. 348B Polarographic Analyzer, connected with a mod. 303A mercury electrode. The experimental conditions are given elsewhere [1]. Batch equilibrium studies were carried out at 25 celsius degree using three types of tropical soils. They were agitated during 24 hours with atrazine concentrations varying between 0.1 and 20 microgr.ml-1. The samples were then centrifuged, to separate soil solution from the soil, and analysed directly by DPP...
