The recent article by Narvenkar et al. (2013) presents new dissolved methane profiles in the water column of eight dam reservoirs in India. The authors indicate that dissolved methane concentration is relatively low when
compared to that of tropical reservoirs in South America, particularly those located in the Amazon region (Abril et al. 2005; Guérin et al. 2006). In general, the authors conclude that methane emissions from these
reservoirs might be substantially lower than previously estimated (Lima et al. 2008) because (i) most of the methane accumulated in the hypolimnion can be oxidized by methanotrophic bacteria in upper layers, (ii) the
water intake of dam outflows is usually well above the hypolimnion, and (iii) despite water intake reaches the hypolimnion in some cases, the concentration of methane in the outflow water is negligible. |
