The Amazon rain forest was, before the Europeans came, as cultivated as forests anywhere else in the world. It was not 'virgin'. The native people still living within the forest are remnants descended from highly structured societies with suitably developed agriculture and food systems. A vast number of foods including guaraná, açaí and manioc (above) have been cultivated for thousands of years. This revolutionises understanding of the nature and value of Amazonia, the imperative need to protect and strengthen its own identity, and to learn yet again that in agro-ecology is the salvation of the planet. |

RESUMO - Atraves da avaliacao do numero de ramos, numero de nos, area foliar total e numero de graos por planta, no final do ciclo, estudou-se o comportamento de plantas de feijoeiro (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), quanto a plasticidade, sob influencia de diferentes densidades de populacao. Utilizaram-se quatro cultivares: Canario 107 (habito determinado, tipo arbustivo); Michoacan 12-A-3 (habito indeterminado, tipo ereto e hastes curtas) e Negro 150 e Flor de Mayo X-16441 (ambas de habito indeterminado, tipo trepador). A cultivar Canario 107 apresentou menor plasticidade em relacao as cultivares de habito indeterminado. Este comportamento faz supor que esta cultivar deva alcancar maiores rendimentos em densidades de populacao mais elevadas. Entre as cultivares de habito indeterminado, a de tipo ereto e hastes curtas, Michoacan 12-A-3 apresentou menor plasticidade do que as cultivares de tipo trepador, Negro 150 e Flor de Mayo X-16441. ABSTRACT - The influence of population densities on the plasticity of beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), was studied through number of branches, number of nodes, number of seeds and total leaf area per plant, determined at the end of the growth cycle. Four bean cultivars were used: Canário 107, a determinate bush-type; Michoacan 12-A-3, an indeterminate short-vine, erect type, and Negro 150 and Flor de Mayo X-16441, both of them indeterminate, long-vine, climbing type. The indeterminate bus-type Canário 107 shawed lower plasticity than the indeterminate type cultivars and is expected to increase the grain yield with increasing population density. Among the indeterminate types, the short-vine erect type Michoacan 12-A-3 showed lower plasticity than the long-vine cultivars Negro and Flor de Mayo X-16441.
