Young Valencia orange trees were grown to fruiting in large outdoor sand cultures, the only variable being the ratios of the 3 base elements K, Ca, and Mg as carriers of a constant supply of nitrate nitrogen. In this way it was possible to establish a wide range in leaf K with constant Ca and conversely a wide range in leaf Ca with constat K. The varyimg elements were induced to reciprocate with Mg. The results indicate that the K level in the plant is strongly associated with resulting fruit size and degree of coarseness, whereas changes in Ca or Mg levels had very little if any effect. Likewise the changes in juice quality were affected primarily by the K status of the tree. |
