Practical breeders often associate the mid parental and F1 performance of a cross with its breeding potential and use them as a criteria for selecting crosses for further breeding. The present investigation shows that at best mid parental and F1 means may predict the F means and the overall means of second cycle hybrids but not their variances. Since in theory and in practice both statistics are necessary to make reliable predictions (Jinks and Pooni, 1976; Toledo et al., 1984a) meither the mid parental nor F1 mean is a good predictor of the breeding potential of a cross. Selection based upon these predictors is at best only partially effective and at worst completely ineffective. Thus the predictors of Jinks and Pooni (1976) and Toledo et al. (1984a) are the only reliable ones available. |
