The recent increase on oil prices at the international market, associated with the imminent need to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, has led governments in several countries, and consequently the international scientific community, to search for new energy sources that could increase the options of the global energy matrix. Among the various sources of materials, currently evaluated as alternatives for energy production, the use of biomass is presented as the most viable (HALL;HOUSE, 1997). Biomass can be defined as a product of the process by which plants capture energy from the sun and transform it into chemical energy through the photosynthesis process. This energy can be converted into electricity, fuel or heat. In this sense, tropical forage grasses are considered as important alternatives sources for energy and biomaterials. Factors such as the large amount of biomass produced by some species, wide climatic and soil adaptation, relatively low demand for inputs; perenniality of the crops, and of course the possibility of their use for production of products such as meat and milk, make them assume an important role in this new energy scenario. For this reason tropical grasses can be grown as a multiple-purpose crop, allowing great flexibility to producers, that can use their fields for both livestock and energy, according to the convenience or market value of each product. Compared to others tropical grasses, Panicum maximum can be considered one of the most promising species to be used as an energy crop, primarily due to its high biomass productivity and wide adaptability (JANK, 1995). The objective of this research was to evaluate the biomass productivity of 24 genotypes of P. maximum, at the Cerrados Research Center (Planaltina, DF), using a crop management to allow maximum biomass productivity and dry matter content.
