The birds of most elevated parts of hills in western Pantanal are little known, mentioned only in general compilations. We report on the avifauna from western Pantanal wetland. It was recorded a total of 412 bird species, of which 24% are regularly migratory (16 Northern species and 84 Southern species). At least 7 species are in the lists of extinction endangered species at national and global levels. However, other 82 are listed as endangered in other regions of Brazil. There is no avifaunistic endemism for the region, since the bird community is composed by elements of broad geographic distribution. Nonetheless, endemic species of the Cerrado such as Melanopareia torquata, Saltatricula atricollis and Porphyrospiza caerulescens are isolated in Savanna vegetation spots in the most elevated parts of the morrarias. Were encountered typical species of the Chaco and surrounding areas, as Microspingus melanoleucus, Ortalis canicollis, Aratinga nenday, Nystalus striatipectus, Melanerpes cactorum, Celeus lugubris, Xiphocolaptes major; Mimus triurus, Paroaria coronata and Paroaria capitata. The region is also covered by Chiquitano dry forest, and that is why it includes endemic species of this domain, such as: Phaethornis subochraceus, Thamnophilus sticturus and Canthorchilus guarayanus. Moreover, the region shows influence from some taxons that have their distribution centered on the Amazonian region: Coccycua minuta, Celeus flavus, Myrmotherula multostriata, Pyriglena leuconota, Dendroplex picus, Dendrocolaptes picumnus and Hylophilus pectoralis. The mixed formation of the avifauna and the relevance of the region as an important crossing point for several migratory species emphasize the need for creating preservation units that consider several environments of the local landscape. Mainly the grasslands of the hills top and the Chiquitano dry forest, both with extremely restricted distribution in the West of Brazil.
