ABSTRACT: A research project on farming community development has been carried out by Embrapa Cerrados (Savannah Agricultural Research Center of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation) in three Agrarian Reform Settlement Projects (PA): PA Jibóia, PA Paraíso and PA Santa Clara Furadinho, in Unaí country, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. At its initial phase, there was a diagnose and survey of information about the interpersonal interaction among group members. The objective of this article is to discuss the applicability of Moreno Sociometry in mapping the interpersonal relations between the land reform settlers to subsidize development of farming communities. initially, farmers were interviewed and requested to respond to three questions related to their understanding of political interaction among settled; interpersonal interaction (interaction with friends and neighbors); and technical interactions. This study attempted to verify the motives by witch the settlers communicate within the settlement. The results on political interaction, show that: all choices of directors was based on social status with a low percentage of isolated people, where, initiative and level of afffinity had a high weight. Relative to interpersonal interactions, it was found that the choices were more personalized (scattered), with a higher percentage of isolated people based on relationship (Kinship) to the person chosen, geographic location (neighbors) and affinity. Relative to technical interaction, a situation of scattered choices was observed, taking into account knowledge, geographic location (neighbors), relationship (kinship) and affinity. It was concluded that the settlers maintain a low level or interpersonal interaction and/or communication. This is a restrictive factor to the appearance of new local leadership, group interaction and the development of collective activities, especially those which have no control of individual production and which depend on group integration.
