Desiccated coconut is produced in a number of tropical countries but the world market, which comprises a traded quantity of about 125,000 tones per annum, is dominated by two producing countries, the Philippines and Sri Lanka. The most importan consuming countries are to be found in North America and Western Europe although trade sttistics show that markets for desiccated coconut exist all over the world. The world market in recent years has remained fairly stagnant, showing neither atrend towards growth nor decline. The price of the product is subject to considerable variation but since 1977 has remained at fairly high levels. The CIF price, North Europe, in 1980 rose to over US $11,500 per tonne a number of potential supplying countries have expressed interest in entering this market and the prospects for new suppliers are examined. |
