This study encompasses evaluations of the resources CAB Abstracts, AGRICOLA and the Brazilian Bibliography of Savanna as information sourcesto supply Brazilian researchers information needs. The first evaluation, regarding the use of the world literature on savanna agriculture, was based on 65 questionnaires applied in Brazil. The second evaluation, regarding the structure of CAB and AGRICOLA database, consists of ananalysis of two printouts corresponding to retrospective on-line searches in these databases for the period 1972-1981. Finally, the study includes bibliometric analysis of the Brazilian Bibliography of Savanna which is compared to the other two resources for the Brazilian literature in agriculture of savanna. It was found that 31.21% of the 612 relevant citations recorded by AGRICOLA and 15.12% of the 1637 recorded CAB are from the Brazilian literature in this subject. CAB and AGRICOLA, when compared with the Brazilian Bibliography of Savanna, are weak information sources relating to this subject. Most users of savanna literature preferred CAB Abstracts to AGRICOLA because of the presence ofabstracts and because of the subject coverage. A very high percentage of the international literature indexed in CAB and AGRICOLA can be absorbed by Brazilian researchers in this field without any language problems. |
