Seeds of wheat at 6.5% and 13.2% and rice at 7.4% and 11.5% moisture content were stored at: 32°C, 80-90% relative humidity (RH); 22°C, 60-70% RH; and at - 18°C uncontrolled RH. Containers were made of paper, cotton, polyethylene, laminated aluminium foil, glass and metal in 24 combinations. Some flexible materiais were used inside rigid ones. Containers were sealed by various methods. Moisture content, germination of seeds and seedling vigour were assessed at three month intervals over a 2 I month period. The most efficient containers were hermetically sealed laminated aluminium foil packages and metal cans with tight fitting screw caps followed by glass bottles with threaded bakelite caps. Rapid deterioration of seeds occurred in permeable containers, with wheat deteriorating more rapidly than rice. Contrary to predictions, seeds at - 18° C showed evidence of deterioration at 21 months and possible reasons are discussed. |
