Canchim is a synthetic beef cattle developed in Brazil which have good growth potential and tropical adaptation but suboptimal fat deposition. There are genomic regions associated with fat deposition already described, among them the centromeric region of BTA14. The scope of this work was to identify genomic regions associated with backfat thickness in Canchim (5/8 Charolais + 3/8 zebu) and MA (offspring of Charolais bulls and 1/2 Canchim + 1/2 Zebu cows) populations and to validate the association of haplotypes of the BTA14 with backfat thickness in this population. Thirty animals with extreme phenotypes were genotyped with the 54 K SNP chip, revealing 100 signifi cant SNPs contained in chromosomes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 23, 24, 27, 28 and X. Thirty-four SNPs constituted seven chromosomal regions containing 3 or more SNPs located at intervals shorter than 9 Mb and, among these, ten SNPs in BTA 14 were selected for validation. Genotyping in the population was performed by the TaqMan method in families comprising more than 10 individuals with backfat thickness information at the age of 18 months (644 animals). Validation of the BTA14 SNPs revealed two haplotypes, one in the centromeric region and another in the middle region of BTA14, signifi cantly associated with fat thickness, both with additive effects on backfat thickness. Genes located close to these two regions should be further studied to identify potential mutations involved in backfat deposition. RESUMO: O sucesso da lavoura depende do uso de sementes de a lta qua lidade. Essa frase é verdadeira. não somente para a soja, mas também para qualquer grande cultura. É de suma importância. que o produtor rural semeie a sua lavoura com sementes da mais alta qualidade, ou seja, com alta germinação e vigor. Dados de pesquisa demonstram que a utilização de sementes de alto vigor resulta em melhor estabelecimento do cultivo, com a população de plantas em número adequado, sendo essas plantas de maior vigor, ou seja de alto desempenho. Lavouras que foram instaladas com sementes de alto vigor têm um maior potencial de produtividade, principalmente se a lavoura for exposta às condições estressantes. Sementes de alto vigor têm maiores índices e velocidade de germinação e de emergência, mesmo em condições de estresse, como por exemplo: quando a semeadura é realizada com maior profundidade; quando ocorrem compactação superficial ou assoreamentos na linha de semeadura; ou com a ocorrência de baixas temperaturas por ocasião da semeadura. Plântulas que emergem mais cedo têm vantagens competitivas sobre as que emergem mais tarde, pois têm melhor aproveitamento de água, luz e nutrientes e o processo fotossintético das plantas é iniciado mais cedo e de maneira mais eficiente. Plantas vigorosas apresentam uma taxa de crescimento maior, tendo maior acúmulo de matéria seca e resultando em plantas com melhor estrutura de produção, ou seja, maior área foliar e melhor sistema radicular. E, consequentemente, essas plantas têm maior capacidade de produção de vagens e sementes e, portanto, têm um maior potencial de rendimento de grãos. RESUMEN: El éxito de un cultivo depende dei uso de semi lia de Alta Calidad. Esta es válido no solo para soja sino para cualquier cultivo agronómico . Es muy importante que los productores implanten sus cul tivos con semilia de la más Alta Calidad, por ejemp lo con alta germinación y alto vigor. Los datas de investigación nos muestran que el uso de semi lia de alto vigor resultan en un mejor estableci miento de los cultivos, con el número adecuado de población de plantas, con plantas de mayor ta mano y de un más elevado expresión dei potencial. Los cultivos implantados con semilia de alto Vigor tiene un mayor potencia l de rendimiento, especialmente si el cultivo es expuesto a condic iones ambienta les de stress. Semillas de alta calidad tiene tasas elevadas de germinación y emergencia, aún bajo condiciones de stress, tales como, siembra más profunda; compactación superficial, que se presente a la siembra, o con bajas tem peraturas a la siembra. Plántulas que emergen tempranamente, tienen una ventaja competitiva sobre aquellas que se retrasan, ya que utilizarán el agua, la luz y los nutrientes más efic ientemente .Y los procesos fotosin téticos de las plantas se inician más tempranamente y con mayor eficiencia. And, consequently, these plants have increased production capacity of pods and seeds and therefore have a greater potential for grain yield.
