The metabolism of copper in ruminants is dependet on both sulfate and molybdate. The interactions between these three element have been studied for 30 years, yet a unified mechanism for their interaction has not emerged. recent experiments using purified diets to control these three variables have led to the working model presented here. The direct antagonistic interaction between copper and molybdenum appears to be due to the formation on cupric molybdate, and that between copper and sulfate due to the formation of cupric sulfide. The interactions between sulfate and molybdate, however, appear at this time to occur at several sites with different effects. Since molybdate can inhibit sulfate reduction, it may decrease the amount of sulfide formed from sulfate in the rumen and, therefore, increase the amount of copper available to the animal. Initial studies also suggest that sulfate and molybdate interact antagonistically at the membrane transport level. |
