Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merril] seed quality is influenced by the several factors experienced during seed production, handling, and storage. Humid and warm environments during seed maturation can markedly increase seed infection by Phomopsis spp. and sometimes Fusarium spp. (mainly F. semitectum). It this situation occurs, viability as expressed by standard germination (rolled paper toweling) can be drastically reduced, but emergence in soil or sand may not be affected if the physiological quality of the seed is good, and the environmental conditions are adequate for fast germination and emergence. Rolled paper toweling the simplest and most widely used method for the evaluation of germination of soybean seed, is not an appropriate method to evaluate germination of seeds with high incidence of Phomopsis spp. and F. semitectum. Great losses to the seed industry are expected it the rolled-paper-test is used (or misused) to estimate seed viability of seed lots with high incidence of these fungi. Many seed lots of good quality are annualy discarded as grain because inadequate procedures are utilized. In Brazil, it was estimated that 20% of all commercial seed lots produced in 1998 (around 200,000 tons) would be discarded, if the proper testing procedures were not applied. Due to the importance of this problem, special analysis procedures were developed at the National Center for Soybean Research (Embrapa Soja). These procedures, known as COMDIA (Complete Diagnosis, or DIACOM in Portuguese), combine the use of the tetrazolium, blotter and emergence in sand tests. Today, COMDIA is adopted by all seed laboratories in Brazil, for the analysis of soybean. This fact was achieved after and intensive training program, which involved more than 1,000 persons directly involved in seed production, analysis, teaching and research. COMDIA accurately provides the actual germination potential of the seed lots, their vigor index and also identifies the major causes of seed weakness, such as mechanical, weathering and stink bug damages, thus enabling the seed producers to correct possible flaws in the production system, promoting the production of high quality seeds. Additionally, COMDIA idenfies the major fungi infecting the seeds, assisting the Agronomist to recommend the most adequate mixture of systemic and contact fungicides for seed treatment. The use of COMDIA is recommended even before harvesting to check for the quality of the seeds one or two days before that operation. COMDIA contributed for the adoption of a refined, versatile and precise system of seed quality evaluation in Brazil. MenosSoybean [Glycine max (L.)
