From 2002 to 2005, within the EU funded programme ECOGEN (www.ecogen.dk), effects of
GM maize (Bt and/or Herbicide Tolerant maize) on soil communities (bacteria, protozoa,
nematodes, Collembola and earthworms) were compared to conventional varieties. The main
objective was to consider GM crops as part of a cropping system in which other factors, including
for example tillage, would also vary. Field experiments were set up in three bioclimatic zones
from North to South Europe (Denmark, North-East of France, South-West of France). In each
bioclimatic zone, randomised block and plot designs were set up, including GM varieties, nearisogenic
and other conventional maize varieties. Maize was cultivated as closely as possible to
the real farming practices of each bioclimatic zone, taking into account soil properties and climatic
conditions.
Samples were collected twice a year, usually in spring or autumn. Species were identified and
results were compared using classic univariate and multivariate methodologies. Here, a special
focus is done on the use of multivariate methodologies to analyse community changes and data
mining to hierarchy factor of variations.
A general overview of main results is presented here, showing effects of agricultural practices,
including GM crop effects that varied between taxa, sites, sampling occasions and soil properties. |
