Bovine Respiratory Distress Syndrome (BRDS) in stressed feedlot calves in the Imperial Valley of California, causes great economic losses. Plasma concentration of serotonin, cortisol, fibrinogen, protein, the activity of acid phosphatase, and packed cell volume were measured in the blood of 60 feedlot calves on day 0 (the day they arrived at the feedlot), and on days 7, 14, 28, and 56. Statistical analysis showed that serotonin could explain 19.11% of the variability in total days of sickness. Three variables (consisting of three of the six variables analysed, but on different days) were able to correctly classify the 15 calves with highest weight gain and the 15 calves with lowest weight gain. |
