Advances in drip irrigation management rely on knowledge of the soil water distribution and dynamics within the wetted soil volume. Information on the integrated effects of water flow from a dripper with extraction by plant roots is essential for proper irrigation management. Available numerical and analytical frameworks have been used for obtaining this information, however the lack of information on plant uptake patterns and intensity limits their practicability. The objectives of this study were to develop a framework for describing a realistic picture of soil water dynamics within the wetted volume by considering transient water flow and root extraction patterns simultaneously and to apply the information to drip irrigation management, and in particular,to sensor -based schemes. Bivariate gaussian distribution density functions (semi-lognormal, normal and lognormal) were proposed as parametric models for describing two-dimensional water uptake intensity patterns under different plant-dripper configurations. The proposed parametric models agreed well with actual measured uptake intensity distributions. An analytical framework for soil water dynamics predictions was selected due to its modest parameter requirement and direct link between inputsand outputs. Suitability of several analytical solutions for steady and transient flow from point sources were evaluated for drip irrigation management. The transient solutions provided a better description soil water dynamics in absence of plants.....
