"Genetic resources" and "germplasm" usually mean a same thing in plant improvement with the former from breeding point of view while the latter from genetics point of view. In narrow sense, genetic resources for greeding purposes are only a part of germplasm supposed to be useful in breeding program, but in broad sense, include all the genetic materials related to the crop plant. One annual species in subgenus Soja and 12 perennial species in subgenus Glycine were reported to be wild relatives of the cultivated soybean species, Glycine max (L.) Merr., subgenus Soja. Among the perennial species, five were newly added to the list given by Hymowitz and Singh (1987). They are G. arenaria Tind., G. argyrea Tind., G. curvata Tind., G. cyrtoloba Tind., and G. micro- phylla (Benth.) Tind. Obviously, all the 14 species in genus Glycine are genetic resources for breeding purposes of soybean in broad sense. |
