Most food produced in the Third World countries of the tropics is grown on small family farms where the use of fertilizer and other agro-chemicals is minimal. This might be thought to be an excellent opportunity for the use of BNF technology, but usually N2 fixation is limited by soil pH, phosphorus supply or other fertility constraint. Without lime or P fertilizer BNF inputs are often extremely limited. Where correction of major nutrient deficiencies is practised, rhizobium inoculation can occasionally produce significant yield increases, but this is mainly restricted to crops with specific rhizobium requirements planted in areas other than where they originated. The main challenge in adapting BNF technology for family farms in the tropics is the development of integrated management systems based on crop rotations and/or intercrops including productive legumes where fixed N is transferred efficiently to the staple food grains (principally rice, maize, wheat, sorghum and millets). This requires strategic management of crop residues and tillage practices, selection/development of appropriate legume germplasm and above all, on-farm trials to assess acceptability to farmers. |
