Two experiments were carried out in 1974-75, and one in each of 1975-76 and 1976-77. In 1974-75, which had a very dry late spring, irrigation increased yields from an average of 3 t/ha up to 4.4 t/ha. In the subsequent seasons, which had above average rainfall, non-irrigated wheat averaged 5.6 t/ha and yield responses were less than 6%. Yield responses to irrigation were accompanied by increases in grain weight and decreases in grain nitrogen concentration. Fertiliser N reduced yields at all but the highest irrigation level in one experiment in the dry season, but in the 2 wet seasons, yields were increased by the application of N. In 1974-75,Karamu was higher yielding than Kopara and more responsive to irrigation, but the grain N percentage of Kopara was higher than that of Karamu or Gamenya. In 1975-76 and 1976-77, yields increased and 1000-grain weights decreased as sowing rates increased from 80 to 250 kg/ha. |
