All the investigations and experiments which were carried out along this work were performed on the following passion fruit botanical varieties: The purple passionfruit (Passiflora edulis Sims. f. edulis) and the yellow passion fruit (Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa Deg.). We followed, in this work, fruit development, from flowering and fruit set to ripening,a nd studied the involvement of ehylene in these processes. The effect of exogenous ethylene on fruit ripening and abscission was also investigated, with the hope of developing means to control fruit abscission, and thus to concentrate fruit gathering. The great majority of experiments were conducted with fruits of known age, after hand pollination at anthesis. The relatively big permitted us to follow upfruit ontogeny from anthesis. Results were summarized: 1. Growth pattern of purple passion fruit; 2. Effect of plant growth regulators on fruit set and fruit development; 3. Ethylene production by passion fruit flowers; 4. Ethylene production by the fruit, during its development, maturation and ripening; 5. Effect of ethylene and Ethrel on attached and detached fruits; 6. Changes in ACC content in fruit tissues, in relation to ethylene production, during fruit development and ripening. |
