Goat farming is one of the most important social and economic factors for keeping people on the land in the Northeast of Brazil, where the semi arid climatic conditions are difficult, associated with the "caatinga" vegetation. These condition have impaired that reproductive programs have been realized successfully. The results obtained for natural breeding and artificial insemination for fertility, prolificity, pregnancy length and number of kids born were, respectively, 81%, 61%, 116%, 186%, 148 days, 142 days, 704 and 760. These results indicate that artificial insemination, compared with natural breeding, is better, quantitatively and qualitatively, for the number of kids born and for genetic potential, and might be recommended for the extensive productive systems of the semi-arid regions of the Northeast of Brazil. |
