Cotton (Gossypium Hirsutum L.) stalk destruction after harvest is a cultural practice that reduces the overall boll weevil population (Anthonomus grandis Boheman) as well as the number of weevils entering diapause. Destruction of cotton plants after harvest deprives the boll weevil of a food source for supporting large winter populations thereby reducing insecticide usage, minimizing environmental hazards, and increasing cotton production profits for the following growing season. Thus, the Boll Weevil Control Law was passed in 1987 that requires Texas cotton farmers to destroy cotton stalk before the prescribed deadline. The use of 1990 TIGER/LineTM CENSUS FILES (TIGER/LineTM is a trademark of the Bureau of the Census) was tested as a enforcement tool for locating fields with undestroyed cotton stalk. Results showed that TIGER/LineTM file county maps were an efficient tool for locating aerially obtained global position system coordinates of fields with undestroyed cotton stalk and for providing street address and census block number matches to these fields for rapid ownership determination. Thus, TIGER/LineTM files proved to be a cost effective tool for helping to enforce the Lower Rio Grande Valley's stalk destruction deadline. |
