During May 1993 a nematode survey was conducted in a experimental area of Embrapa Cerrados, Planaltina, Federal District of Brazil where, 18 genotypes of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) were sampled for nematode presence. Three composite soil and root samples were collected from the rhizospheres of cach genotype before harvest. The nematodes were extracted form 100g of soil and 10g of roots utilizing modified Coolen's method. Seven species of plant-nematodes, with decreasing frequency of occurrence in genotypes were: Meloidogyne javanica (100%), Helicotylenchus dihstera (100%), Aphelenchoides sp. (100%), Ditylenchus sp. (100%), Criconemella ornata (44%), Paratrichodorus minor (44%) and Pratylenchus brachyurus (17%). Two species of mycophagos nematodes were found and their frequency of occurrence in genotypes was: Aphelenchus avenae (100%) and Tylenchus sp. (94%). Free-living nematodes were present in all the samples. Aphelenchus avenae, Tylenchus sp. and free-living nematodes were found associated with 100%, 94% and 100% genotypes respectively. The average population densities of M. javanica varied between 1006 /sample for genotype M 734 and 5041 for genotype BR 122; H. dihystera population densities/sample varied between 120 for genotype BR 122 and 612 for GKI-MB. Criconemella ornata, P. minor and P. brachyurus, when found, were present in very low numbers per sample. |
