The influence of soil properties on the distribution of tree species was investigated in some gallery forest on the Chapada dos Veadeiros (13o - 15o S; 47o - 49o W) in the cerrado region of Central Brazil. Soil properties of the surface horizons and phytosociology of six gallery forests were studied. Principal Component Analysis revealed that gradients associated with soil chemical properties separated the forests into three distinct groups. Two-way Indicador Species Analysis (TWINSPAN) based on the densities of tree species separated the two forest communities on hydromorphic sandy soils from the other four comunities, two on concretionary soils and two on latosols, at the highest level. No further divisions resulted which could be directly attributed to gradients in soil properties. Detrended Canonical Correspondence Analysis using only soil classes as environmental variables resulted in a strong correlation of environmental variables with tree density and grouping of sites similar to TWINSPAN results, indicating that fertility parameters alone did not explain the diferences in phytosociology. Variations in water table and drainage conditions seem to play an important role in the distribution of species in the gallery forests of the cerrado region. |
