This study presents differentiated behaviors of two facies of a tropical soil. Soil characteristics and microbiota, field-monitored for two years, showed that different water velocities originated diverse responses to rainfall; altered oxygenation and nutrient conditions resulted in differentiated carbon availability and cycling. The facies with lower carbon and water content supported a 35% less active but 3?4 timesmore efficientmicrobiota. Higher soil moisture in the silty facies (67%) led to increased carbon (12-fold) degradation and availability (3-fold), but not higher biomass. Soil and environmental conditions apparently rule microbiota metabolic state, hence the need to evaluate them as microbial growth support. |
