In Brazil, the scarcity of naturally fertile land to feed the growing population has resulted in the expansion of agriculture into the savannahs (Cerrados). During the last 20 years, massive public investment has supported agricultural research and provided incentives to the agricultural sector for development of that region. Today, the Cerrados are a major producer of crops as well beef and forestry products. The success of this possibilities for agricultural expansion on a high-input, sustainable basis. Agricultural expansion into the Cerrados has benefited from natural conditions such as sufficient rainfall, favourable temperatures, a topography that is suited to mechanization, good soil drainage as well as low land prices. Production was limited by undesirable soil properties (high acidity and Al levels and low fertility and water-holding capacity), distance from the sea ports and major cities and lack infrastucture. Skilled farmers from southern Brazil brought their entrepreneurial endurance to the unfamiliar Cerrados. They quickly adopted new technologies for the success of agriculture in the region, notably cultivation of soybean. The adaptation of the soybean crop to these low latitudes required development of varieties with long juvenile stage. This breakthrough opened the way for more diverse crop rotation possibilities. Other crops now being grown include maize, beans, cassava, coffee, fruit crops and pastures. It expected tha other non-traditional crops such as cotton, quinoa, sesame, guar, ...
