Plasma oestrogen concentration in normal and aborter does which received a submaintenance energy diet during the last third of pregnancy was determined by competitive protein binding assay (CPB). Circulating oestrogens in normal does remained at a relatively low level of 500 pg/m1 plasma during the first 90 days of gestation. Following the nutritional change the mean plasma oestrogen concentration abruptly increased to 1951 pg/ml and which was maintained at a similar level up to parturition. In all aborters and does whose kids had died perinatally the increase in circulating oestrogens, due to the stress of subnutrition, was significantly higher than in normal does. It is concluded that abortions following nutritional stress are mediated by an elevated oestrogen level which leads to expulsion of the conceptus. Oestrogen concentration in foetal plasma increased progressively from 160 pg/ml at the 72nd day to 320 pg/ml at the 140th day of gestation. The results suggest no direct relationship between maternal and foetal plasma oestrogen levels |
