ABSTRACT: The stink bug Dichelops melacanthus (Dallas, 1851) has become one of the major pests of maize and wheat in Brazil, mainly after a shift from the conventional tillage system to the no till cultivation system. This fact may be due to the simultaneous occurrence of second-planting maize with wheat and the stink bug wild hosts. To study the natural occurrence of D. melacanthus, in this study aimed to evaluate the population dynamics of this stink bug in wild hosts adjacent to areas cultivated with maize, wheat and soybean during the season and off-season of soybean. Weekly surveys were conducted in the region of Londrina, PR, from the beginning of July of 2007 up to the end of June of 2008, using the square meter method weekly. Results indicated the following plants as hosting the bug: corn (Zea mays L.), soybean (Glycine max (L.)), wandering jew (Commelina erecta L.), hairy indigo (Indigofera hirsuta L), crotalaria (Crotalaria pallida L.), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and signal grass (Brachiaria decumbens). Soybean seeds were more suitable than wandering jew seeds for nymphal development.
