Abstract: From laboratory observations of [bovine] spermatozoal motility at the end of 1-, 3-, and 6-day storage periods in coconut milk extender, the effects of the presence and absence of air, yolk, and catalase at room temp, were tested in a 2s factorial experiment. The deleterious effect of air, significant at the 1 % level of probability, was counteracted in part by the presence of yolk during the first 3 days of storage. Since the majority of inseminations with fresh semen are made within 3 days after semen collection, the inclusion of at least 0.5% yolk in the extender is indicated. The difficulty of preventing air damage to sperm under standard operating conditions also indicated that catalase should be an integral part of the extender. The freezing and storage of moderate volumes of boiled coconut milk appears to be a satisfactory and economical method of providing a ready supply of milk for various volumes of extender.-Summ. 1 more result for "survival of spermatozoa in coconut milk extenders." |
