Forage nutritive value appaears to be most suitably expressed as the product of concen-
tration of Utilizable Energy (E) and Intake Per Unit of Body Weight (I). Three laboratory de-
terminations, namely, (1) IVCD-12 hour in vitro cellulose digestion by rumen microorganism
(2) CED - solubility of cellulose in cupriethylenediamine, and (3) DMS - solubility of forage dry matter in 1.0 N H2SO4 were studied as predictors of forage nutritive value. IVCD va-
lues were more higly correlated with in vivo measurements for grasses, while CED, DMS or both, were more higly correlated with alfalfa data. The best correlations were obtained, ho-
wever, when either IVCD or CED values were combined with DMS values. When various in vitro criteria and date of cutting were used to predict in vivo values for 12 first cutting
Ohio forages, dry matter or energy digestibility (E) was most accurately predicted by CED x DMS. Relative Intake (I) was best predicted by DMS. Nutritive Value Index (E x I) was
most accurately predicted by DMS, IVCD x DMS, or cellulose composition. Laboratory me-
asurements were generally more closely related to nutritive value than date of cutting. Al-
though laboratory techniques appear to be higly useful in predicting nutritive value of pas-
ture or grazed forages, care must be used since the digestibility of undried forages appear
to be greater than dried forages. |
