Abstract: 1. The effect of experimental anemia induced by phlebotomy on some red cell metabolites and enzymes has been studied in the goat. 2. Mean levels of reduced glutathione (GSH) rose from 4.5 to 7.0 ?mols/gHb, and ATP from 2 to nearly 3 ?mols/gHb. 2,3-DPG rose from a mean concentration of 1 ?mol/gHb to 3.4 ?mols/gHb as a result of anaemia. 3. G6PD activity increased from a mean of 2.5 enzyme units (E.U.) to 3.25 E.U. and 6PGD increased from 3.5 E.U. to 5.0 E.U. The activity of LDH rose from 20 E.U. to 30 E.U. 4. Mammals with low red cell 2,3-DPG levels, such as the goat, have raised levels of 2,3-DPG and ATP during anaemia. The adaptive significance of this is uncertain. |
