The characterization and study of the genetic variability of papaya germplasm is the first step to increase the crop diversity, aiming at the development of new varieties or hybrids. To estimate genetic variability among genotypes, discrete and continu-ous traits are commonly employed. In several cases, the analysis and interpretation of these traits are carried out separately, due to the lack of mathematical models that combine information from discrete and continuous data on a single matrix. The objective of this work was to evaluate the simultaneous analysis of morpho-ag-ronomic variables and molecular data, and clustering this genetic diversity derivate from papaya germplasm. We evaluated 12 discrete (morphological), 20 agronomic (continuous) and 383 discrete (AFLP - Amplified fragment length polymorphism data) in 17 accessions of papaya. We used the Gower distance to obtain genetic distance matrix and four clustering techniques (single and complete linkage, Ward and UPGMA - Unweighted Pair Group Method with Arithmetic mean). The UP-GMA clustering method showed the strongest correlation between the dissimi-larity matrix and dendrogram (cophenetic correlation coefficient of 0.77), and is therefore used to represent the variability of these genotypes. The Gower genetic distance ranged from 0.14 to 0.30, with an average of 0.20. We obtained six groups of diversity, using the average of genetic distance as a cutoff point to define the clusters. We observed that the commercial varieties Golden, Sunrise, the Calimosa hybrid and CMF070 and CMF028 germplasm were grouped. Wide variability was found in the analysis of 17 papaya genotypes, which may be used in plant breeding. Moreover, the Gower distance as dissimilarity measure was very effective to express the degree of genetic diversity among the genotypes, using morpho-agronomic and molecular data jointly.
