The use of agro-industrial byproducts in the production of animal diets has become very popular as these are often low-cost raw-materials with high nutritive value. The present work evaluated diets incorporating agro-industrial byproducts for the mass rearing of the Mediterranean fruit fly used in Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) control programs. Diets were elaborated using industrial sub-products (shrimp heads, okara, and fresh commercial yeast) that were subjected to enzymatic hydrolysis or autolysis and subsequently used for biological testing (of egg production) with a laboratory line of Ceratitis capitata Wiedemann. The diets that promoted the greatest levels of egg production all contained yeast. Among these yeast-containing diets, the average production of eggs/female/day varied from 197.75±40.97 to 325.15±54.45; the diet containing autolyzed fresh yeast (AFY) was most similar (325.15±54.45) to the commercial control diet (365.85± 66.02) in terms of egg production. Based on these results, the autolyzed fresh yeast diet was determined to be best for mass-rearing Mediterranean fruit fly. |
