Successful ensilage of forage crops by bacterial production of lactic requires the presence of considerable amounts of fermentable carbohydrate particulary when the protein content is high. Indeed, the ratio of protein to avaliable carbohydrate is probably more critical than the actual carbohydrate content; it has been shown, for instance, that a grass which ensiles well can be made to go wrong by the addition of excess nitrogen in the form of aminoacid, unless the sugar is simultaneously increased. |
