Abstract: In a study of seasonal variation in the intensity of infestation of goats by Demodex caprae Raill., changes in the number of demodectic nodules on goat-skins collected monthly were compared with meteorological data for air temperature, relative humidity and total rainfall. Significant positive correlations were found with the last 2 of these. It was found from examination of the caprine foetal skin that goats become infested during their prenatal life, and the mite is thenceforth carried in the skin. During the post-natal life of the host, the activity of the mites is determined by factors that affect the skin-surface humidity, and is highest in the monsoon and post-monsoon periods. When conditions are suitable for proliferation of the mites, the latter become numerous enough to cause cutaneous lesions. When conditions become unsuitable, the lesions regress and disappear, only to reappear later when conditions again become favourable. |
