Terrestrial megadrile earthworms variously reported from Taiwan have increased from 26 nominal
species in 1999 to the current 74, with 32 of these, or 46%, non-natives for which 69% are
Asiatic Megascolecidae and 13% are Lumbricidae of Holarctic origin. Other non-natives include
Pontoscolex corethrurus (Müller, 1856) of the Glossoscolecidae and Eukerria saltensis (Beddard,
1895) of the Ocnerodrilidae from South America, three species of Dichogaster of the
Octochaetidae, and Drawida japonica (Michaelsen, 1892) of the Moniligastridae. The rest 42
species, or 54% of the island?s earthworm fauna, are endemic, all belonging to the pheretimoid
genera Amynthas, Metaphire, Pithemera or Polypheretima of the Megascolecidae. Around 100
or more new species, mostly endemic, are roughly estimated in the waiting list to be discovered
and described. This endemic diversity has been greatly impacted by past orogeny, which resulted
in species groups composed of ally species caused by allopatric speciation, such as the 13
gigantic taxa of the Metaphire formosae species group. However, as a consequence of the
general lack of diagnostic characters in earthworms, species indiscriminate morphologically
from each other, or cryptic species, and overlooked interspecific and intraspecific variations
have greatly impeded the discovery of the endemic diversity. Recently, DNA barcode, the use of
DNA sequences of a selected gene fragment as a tag for species identification, provides a way
that complements the morphological ambiguity to help confirm a specimen?s identity. By an
example of more than 50 Taiwanese earthworm species, we demonstrate how DNA barcode
helps in expanding our knowledge of species diversity and solving taxonomic problems, as well
