A method was development for the esterification of coconut C12 fatty acid with glycerol to produce monolaurin in good yield and quality. Th reaction parameters. i.e. molar ratio of the reactants, temperature,time and catalyst were optimized to obtain a product in 63% yield with 95.87% purity. The degree of purification on the product has been found to be a limiting factor to confort with the standard speification required for various applications of monolaurin. Fatty acid composition of the raw materials and the monolaurin, diaurin content of the samples were determined and compared with standard specification. |
